Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has given up on the race for the Champions League zone next season. Klopp admitted that Liverpool have no chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League standings, in a press conference ahead of the match against Brentford on Saturday (6/5/2023).
Liverpool are currently still stuck in fifth place in the standings with a collection of 59 points. They only have four matches left to secure a place in the top four of the standings.
Klopp calculated Liverpool’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League zone next season and realized that his team had no chance if Liverpool’s competitors were able to sweep all matches with a win.
“Other teams are in a much better position, as long as they win the game, we have no chance,” Klopp said.
In Klopp’s count, Manchester United and Brighton are Liverpool’s two toughest competitors in the race for the Champions League zone. MU excels with a collection of 63 points and saves one game more than Liverpool. While Brighton are in brilliant form, could be surprising if they wipe out the remaining six games.
“We have to keep the team behind us. If Brighton win all their games and how they played last night, it is possible, excellent performance, very good game,” said Klopp.
Although it is not certain, Klopp finally decided to change Liverpool’s course to finish in the highest possible position at this time. Liverpool will compete against Brentford on Saturday (6/5/2023) and Klopp feels that the match is very important for Liverpool to maintain its position in the standings.
“The way they played during the season, the top four teams, no one looks to lose more than win. For us, the plan is to finish as high as we can. It could be, now means (finishing) fifth but that is not given. Sixth is not a given. Aston Villa, Tottenham, Brentford are all fighting for it and so are we,” Klopp said.
In the match against Brentford later, Klopp hopes Liverpool can perform optimally to win the match. However, Liverpool must be vigilant because Brentford are in good form and can surprise.
